RICK LOTTER is a full-time drummer and music educator based in Sacramento, California. He is the drummer in Capital Jazz Project, Sacramento Jazz Orchestra, and Mumbo Gumbo, and serves on the Jazz Studies faculty at Sacramento State University.
Rick began drumming at age four, when his family lived in Malawi, Africa. He later studied drumset, timpani, and mallet percussion with Stanley Lunetta in Sacramento. He began playing professionally in his teenage years and has enjoyed a varied career in the music business as a drummer, educator, bandleader, producer, and record label manager. Rick has worked in settings from combo and big band jazz to rock and worldbeat, and most everything in-between.
Rick has performed professionally with Dave Liebman, Bobby Hutcherson, Geoffrey Keezer, Benny Green, Jessica Williams, Jim Snidero, Bobby Shew, and Carl Anderson. He has recorded and produced dozens of jazz and pop recordings and many radio and television commercials. A dedicated music educator, Rick regularly gives clinics and workshops at high schools, colleges, and music camps throughout Northern California, including the Brubeck Institute at University of Pacific. Rick also maintains a busy private teaching and recording studio.
